A word from
the president

Twenty-five years of Wikipedia. Twenty years of Wikimedia CH.
These anniversaries are an opportunity to celebrate how far we have come, while also inviting us to look forward. The world has changed considerably since Wikipedia’s first edit in 2001— and our work must change with it.
In 2025, that evolution was defined by reflection and ambition. We launched our 2026–2031 strategy development process, grounded in the Theory U framework, an approach that challenges us to listen deeply, engage widely and co-create our future together. At our second Wikipedia Day in Bern, over 100 community members, partners and staff came together for our largest-ever General Assembly, marking the start of that journey.
Wikimedia CH’s evolving role in promoting free knowledge has never been more important. In a world shaped by AI, geopolitical uncertainty and rapidly shifting technology, our platforms are among the few remaining sources for neutral, accurate and freely accessible information. We are actively engaging in digital policy discussions and advocating for open-source principles as a trusted, recognised voice both in Switzerland and at the European level.
But none of this work is possible without our community, who work tirelessly and generously towards our shared mission of promoting and protecting free knowledge. I am enormously grateful for the volunteers, members, donors and partners who give this work its meaning and momentum.
From the bottom of my heart: Danke, Merci, Grazie, Grazcha fich, Thank You.
Matthias Nepfer
Wikimedia CH Board President
